In December 2015, Executive Director Donna Gunning, along with Maggie Walsh, a parent of a client, and Richard Wessbacher, a former client, traveled to Tulsa, Oklahoma to meet with the J. E. and L. E. Mabee Foundation’s trustees to champion our request for a challenge grant to help with renovations to our new headquarters. They brought with them a tray of goodies from Destination Desserts and heart-felt stories of how the Center helps clients with disabilities and their families lead full, productive lives.
Since 1948, the J. E. and L. E. Mabee Foundation has made grants in excess of $1.1 billion to educational, religious and charitable institutions in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. They require grantees to raise 50% of the project budget before even applying. The Foundation’s trustees then determine the amount of the challenge that must be raised within one year’s time.
In January 2016, we were notified that we received a Mabee Foundation challenge grant for $140,000. All of the Center’s fundraising efforts and every dime we raised throughout 2016 were used to meet this goal. With your help, we met the challenge!
The Mabee Foundation’s founders, John E. Mabee and his wife, Lottie E. Mabee, were natives of Missouri. They had no children and died in the 1960’s, leaving a substantial portion of their estates to the Foundation. Their legacies will continue in perpetuity helping charitable organizations to carry on their missions. We are very grateful for their generosity.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to helping us to meet the challenge grant. We are so thankful for your generosity. You can find a list recognizing donors who gave $500 or more here.
