Long-time volunteer helps Destination Desserts move to new kitchen
An invaluable asset of the Destination Desserts team since its inception is volunteer, Ron Walters. Ron, a former manager with Mrs. Alison’s Cookie Company, heard about the Destination Desserts food truck before it ever hit the road and wanted to be involved. He was asked to come out of retirement and assist in training people with disabilities in baking desserts for our new social enterprise.
That was three years ago and he still works four half days per week helping employees with kitchen tasks such as following recipes, dish washing and unloading. “I have to keep moving and stay active. Working with the Destination Desserts staff helps me to be patient. They help me as much as I help them. It gives me a good feeling,” says Ron.
“Ron is such a great volunteer. We’ve truly grown to love and appreciate him,” says Denise Samuels, director of social enterprises. “He will be especially helpful to us as we expand our social enterprises.”
The new social enterprise kitchens, including a separate new kitchen for Wags in a Bag, will allow the Center to double the number of people we train in baking and customer service and expand menu offerings to attract new business.
